What is Cultural Literacy?

Breaking Down the Meaning.

To define cultural literacy it would be to break the word down into it seperate parts; cultural and literacy. When we hear the word cultural we look at the root word culture. Culture means to share common behaviors, beliefs, traditions, and values that can be associated with a particular racial and ethnic groups of people. As with cultural we want to look at the root word of literacy which is literate. To be literate is to be able to comprehend a subject. to comprehend a subject is also to be able read about it, talk about it, and to apply it.

With a combination of the meanings of both words, it can be summed up in this short definiton:

Cultural Literacy means to have sufficient common knowledge, i.e., educational background, experiences, basic skills, and training, to function competently in a given society (the greater the level of comprehension of the given society's habits, attitudes, history, etc., the higher the level of cultural literacy).
